Please join us online Thursday, October 29th, at noon for the Lighthouse Virtual Fall Event.

This free event will include video tours of two Lighthouse locations that young people call home, the Sheakley Center for Youth and the Youth Development Center. The Sheakley Center for Youth is a shelter for young people ages 18-24 experiencing homelessness. The Youth Development Center is a residential treatment home for boys. This is a unique opportunity to go inside the doors where young people work to heal and grow.

Click here to complete your Complimentary Registration now to guarantee your spot.

If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Miller, Lighthouse Development Coordinator at (513) 487-7154 or jemiller@lys.org.

The pandemic won’t stop the fun of the annual NautiCrawl. But it will be a bit different.
For $40, you’ll receive an exclusive Party-at-Home Pack along with an invitation to a Zoom Happy Hour on Thursday, September 24! Each Party-at-Home Pack will include a limited edition t-shirt, cocktail kit, and swag from local bars and restaurants. This annual event is hosted by the Lighthouse Young Professionals Committee. Funds raised from this event support services provided to young people and families by Lighthouse.

Stop by and see all the progress that is being made at the Lighthouse Green Learning Center Powered by Groundwork in Madisonville! To celebrate the official opening of the Greenhouse Groundwork will be hosting an open house for residents and partners to see what’s happening in Madisonville. Stop by to meet staff and see what all we have growing in the greenhouse! We’ll have a plant sale as well with veggies and native plants!

The Agricultural Learning Center is complete!

New learning and mentoring opportunities for young people will sprout in Madisonville soon. Lighthouse Youth & Family Services will open its new Agricultural Learning Center this spring with Groundwork Ohio River Valley (Groundwork) as its Operating Partner.  A project of the National Park Service, Groundwork engages youth and communities in urban environmental activities that positively impact their quality of life.

Groundwork will lead year-round programming at the newly named Lighthouse Green Learning Center powered by Groundwork and the Community Garden at Ward and Chandler Streets. Initiatives will include an education program for students at Lighthouse Community School, summer job opportunities for students, and the Green Corps, a professional urban conservation corps made up of young adults from the city. Groundwork and Lighthouse youth will grow native trees for community reforestation, design demonstration sites, and learn life skills associated with healthy food and business. Groundwork will be partnering with the Civic Garden Center and others to build programming for the school and community.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) young people are often subject to harassment at school, erasure in faith communities, rejection from their families and hostility in youth-serving systems. This systematic abuse leads LGBTQ youth to have significantly higher rates of depression, suicide, substance abuse and homelessness, to name just a few harmful outcomes.

This training from Lighthouse Youth & Family Services helps to promote safe, competent, and supportive care and welcoming environments for LGBTQ young people.

Training Goals and Objectives

  • Explore personal values regarding LGBTQ youth and young adults and learn to balance personal beliefs with professional responsibilities.
  • Identify issues of risk, challenges and strengths specific to LGBTQ youth, their families, other caregivers and service delivery systems.
  • Develop an action plan that will develop or enhance professional and agency cultural competency.
  • Increase competence in discussing sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • Identify affirmative interventions and community resources for LGBTQ youth, their families, other caregivers and service providers.

5.5 CEUs are available for Ohio Social Worker and Counselor licenses. Please note that attendees must attend the full training to receive CEUs.

Breakfast and lunch are provided. Breakfast generally arrives at 8:30 a.m. and the training begins at 9:00 a.m.

If you have dietary restrictions or would like to discuss other accommodations, please reach out to Michelle (contact information listed below) at least one week in advance of the training.

This training is also available for free to Ohio youth-serving organizations that are willing to host it! Please contact Michelle Polek at mpolek@lys.org/513-475-6023 for further information.

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world on December 3, 2019 and every day.

It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
