lighthouse

The Independent Living Program (ILP) at Lighthouse Youth Services has provided shared home and scattered site living experiences for hundreds of youth since its inception in 1980. As one of the oldest and most experienced independent living programs in the country it has become a model for others to emulate and replicate in cities across the nation and around the world.

ILP is now a fully documented (manualized) program available for licensed replication by other agencies. Replication services include full staff training at the Lighthouse Training Institute, onsite consultation and oversight during the implementation phase, as well as program manuals and forms for program documentation.

Mark Kroner, now Director of the Lighthouse Training Institute, was the Director of ILP at Lighthouse for 25 years. Nationally recognized as an expert on independent living, he has published numerous articles and books on the subject and acts as the primary consultant on ILP replications. Mark is also available for training or consultation to existing ILP programs or to assist others in the development of new ILP designs.

Inquiries may be directed to Mark Kroner by email, phone, at 513-487-7130, or by mail at:

Life Skills

Children in out of home care often miss out on critical opportunities to learn some of life’s most basic lessons – everything from how to make a friend to why those rented bowling shoes are wet.  Lighthouse Youth Services is committed to assessing and training every youth in it’s out of home care programs in the development of individualized basic life skills. Every youth in these programs, 8 years and older, is monitored using the Ansell Casey Life Skills Assessment and follows a plan based on this assessment and the learning style of the youth. A number of best practice curricula are used based on the youth’s plan, the setting and the Lighthouse commitment that every child should master life skills necessary to become good citizens who act responsibly and are self-reliant.
